Who has to pay advance tax
Anyone whose total tax liability after TDS exceeds ₹10,000 in a financial year must pay advance tax in four instalments: 15% by 15 June, 45% cumulatively by 15 September, 75% by 15 December and 100% by 15 March.
Resident senior citizens without business income are exempt. Taxpayers on the presumptive schemes under 44AD or 44ADA pay the entire amount in one instalment by 15 March.
How the interest actually bites
Section 234C charges 1% per month for three months on each instalment shortfall, and 1% for one month on the March shortfall. Section 234B adds 1% per month from April until you pay, if you have paid less than 90% of the assessed tax by 31 March.
The practical trap is income that arrives late in the year — a bonus, a capital gain, a big invoice in February. There is a safe harbour for capital gains and lottery income: if you pay the tax in the remaining instalments after the income arises, 234C does not apply to it.
Frequently asked questions
What happens if I miss an advance tax instalment?
Interest under section 234C at 1% per month applies on the shortfall. It is not a penalty and there is no prosecution risk, but it compounds across instalments.
Does TDS reduce advance tax?
Yes. Advance tax is computed on your estimated total tax liability minus TDS and TCS already deducted, so salaried employees with only salary income usually have nothing to pay.
Can I pay all advance tax in March?
You can, but 234C interest for the earlier instalments still applies — except for presumptive taxpayers under 44AD and 44ADA, who are allowed a single 15 March payment.
