Why your in-hand is so much lower than your CTC
CTC is what the employer spends, not what you receive. Between the two sit the employer's EPF contribution (12% of basic), gratuity provision (about 4.81% of basic), any insurance premium, your own 12% EPF deduction, professional tax and income tax.
A useful rule of thumb: for a salary structure with basic at 50% of CTC, in-hand is typically 78-85% of CTC at lower levels and drops toward 65-70% once income tax bites at higher levels.
New regime versus old regime for salaried employees
From FY 2025-26 the new regime gives a ₹75,000 standard deduction and a rebate that makes income up to ₹12 lakh effectively tax-free, but disallows HRA, 80C, 80D and home loan interest on a self-occupied property.
The old regime still wins for people with a genuine large rent outgo, a home loan, and full 80C plus 80D usage. The break-even usually sits around ₹4-4.5 lakh of total deductions. Run both before you lock your declaration for the year — the choice can be worth ₹40,000-₹90,000.
Frequently asked questions
Does this include employer PF in CTC?
Yes. The calculator assumes CTC includes the employer's 12% EPF contribution and a gratuity provision, which is how most Indian offer letters are structured.
Which regime does this use?
You can switch between the new and old regime. The new regime is the default because it is now the default for employers too unless you opt out.
Is professional tax included?
Yes, you can pick your state. Professional tax is a state levy capped at ₹2,500 a year and is deducted from your salary before income tax is computed.
