What belongs on a payslip
A payslip should show the employer's name and address, the employee's name, designation, employee code and the pay period. On the earnings side: basic, HRA, conveyance, special allowance and any bonus. On the deductions side: EPF, ESI where applicable, professional tax, TDS and any advances.
Net pay is earnings minus deductions, and it should reconcile exactly to the bank credit. Include paid days and LOP days — that single line prevents most payroll queries.
Why it matters beyond payroll
Payslips are the primary evidence for loan and visa applications, and for proving statutory deductions during a PF or ESI inspection. Under the Payment of Wages Act and most state shops-and-establishments rules, issuing a wage slip is a legal obligation, not a courtesy.
Keep them consistent month to month. Inconsistent structures across the year make Form 16 reconciliation painful and can trigger questions on the annual TDS return.
